Mrs Devenyns’ Year 7 Dance students have been learning a traditional folk dance from the Philippines called the Tinikling , which involves two people tapping and sliding bamboo poles that a dancer jumps in and out from in creative ways. Named after the long-legged bird called the tikling in the Philippines, the dancers’ movements are thought to imitate the bird as it walks over the grass or dodges bamboo traps set by farmers on rice fields. While the dance is traditional and usually performed to rondallo music, our students performed this dance to “We will rock you” by Queen and had an absolute ball.
