Katie honoured for community contributions.
Southern River College student Katie Russell has been honoured with this year’s Safe City Constable Peter Ball Memorial Youth Award in recognition of her positive contributions to the community. The Year 9 student, who is committed to making the world a better place, has raised money to support cancer research through her participation in the World’s Greatest Shave. She also acts as a mentor to local primary school students.
At the College, Katie shows leadership through her role as a student councillor and her involvement with school programs. She recently established the Women’s Empowerment Club, which advocates for gender equality and provides a safe space for students to discuss issues surrounding women’s rights and the current political climate.
The outstanding young person says she was very grateful to receive the award. “I was overwhelmed with happiness when my name was called, it was a great feeling, but this wouldn’t have happened without the support from my fantastic teachers and family, so I thank them for everything they have done. It feels good to know that I make a positive impact on my community. “
