Music & SIM

The Music Focus Program offers students from Years 7 to 12 a range of opportunities to develop their musical skills and specialist focus. Southern River College in conjunction with the School of Instrumental Music will focus on a contemporary approach to music both instrumentally and through a voice program. Southern River College’s Contemporary Music Program aims to provide talented students with a stimulating course to enrich their skills as musicians.

Students will gain small group tuition with one of our specialist instrumental music teachers whilst participating in a challenging classroom music program with a focus on listening, composing and performing contemporary music. There is an emphasis on music technology including recording and mixing. Students are required to be involved in music performances throughout the year as soloists and/or members of rock bands, the Southern River Vocal Group and various other ensembles.

Students in Years 7 to 10 continue their lessons with their instrumental music teachers and complete their musical training with the classroom Music Program. Students will be involved in music tours, camps, musicals, our variety shows and social outings. Students in Year 10 commence their study of the Senior School Music Course of Study, while students in Years 11 and 12 will have the opportunity to take the Music Course of Study into varying pathways.

In addition students will be required to join either our Contemporary Band or Choir program. Students will need to commit to an after school practise once a week and performances throughout the school year.

If you think your son or daughter would be interested in being a part of the Music Focus Program please contact the college for an application and we will be in touch regarding interviews and testing times.
