Health & Physical Education

All students at Southern River College undertake studies in Health and Physical Education. Students utilise time in the Health and Physical Education Learning Area to develop self-management skills, which are based on informed decision making. Central to the ongoing education of each student is the development of interpersonal skills for the establishment and maintenance of effective relationships in life.

The Health and Physical Education Learning Area encourages and monitors the values each student places on achieving a healthy, active lifestyle. Outcomes linked with the Health and Physical Education Learning Area are predominantly addressed through learning in such areas as health education, physical education, outdoor education, recreation, sport and dance.

Students explore issues related to healthy lifestyle decisions and influences on their self-concept. Protective behaviour skills are established with respect to pressures and influence that impact on their lifestyles. Friendships and peer pressures are analysed and the influences of these relationships are discussed. The impact of puberty and adolescence on their lives is studied and strategies are established to promote positive personal development. Issues related to sexuality are discussed to counter negative influences. Physical Education

An activity approach will link concepts of health education with physical engagement. Skills will be developed in a variety of sports and encourage students to be life long participants in physical activity. Students will be provided the opportunity to develop their interpersonal and self management skills and an opportunity to develop their coaching skills as well.

Outdoor Education

Students selecting Outdoor Education will continue to advance their snorkelling skills, bushwalking and camping skills and roping skills. The physical pursuits will be combined with education on environmental and social issues that apply to safe practice, appreciation and ethics related to using outdoor environments.
